Exploring Puerto Rico’s must see places
We have been exploring the enchanting island of Puerto Rico. Today’s stop was San Felipe del Morro. Located at the entrance of the San Juan bay, this fort, built in the 16th century while the island was under the Spanish rule, is a must see! The price of admission was under $6 for adults and kids are free.

Walk the windy path leading to the entrance of El Morro. Its in the midst of stunning green grounds that are surrounded by water on almost all sides.

Spanish troops began building the forts in San Juan around 1539. They were built over a 50 years span but most of the work was done between the 1760’s-1780’s.

This sentry box ( or outlook post) were used by the Spanish soldiers as watchpoint over the San Juan bay.

According to the National Park Service “San Juan Bay was a sheltered harbor that had high political and military value in the days of sailing ships. The easiest course to cross the Atlantic from Europe to the Americas was to go south to the coast of Africa; place your ship in the dependable trade winds and sail due west to the Caribbean. The trade winds, and wealth of the Caribbean islands in colonial times, made this harbor a target. El Morro was built to defend against sea attackers; later San Cristóbal was built to protect against attack on San Juan by land.”

We loved walking around El Morro. There were so many little places to see, tight spiral stairs, triangular stairs. Huge arch ways, small rooms. There are signs everywhere explaining each little room or path, it was very informative. The kids loved being able to run, walk, climb up stairs & get an up close look at an old Cannon.

My favorite experience was walking down dark tight & steep stair cases to lower (open) levels. You can see the Atlantic ocean and the San Juan bay entrance on the left. If you are lucky and come at the right time, you can see one of two cruise ships extending or entering the bay.

I would say El Morro is a must see, whether you have lived on the island for years or if you have never been to Puerto Rico, make sure this historical landmark is on your must see list. Bring Plenty of water, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, grab a cute hat and take plenty of pictures.
